Mannheim

Val and I took a quick jaunt over to Mannheim on Saturday. Yowza! That was quite a drive! We left Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 0900 and arrived in Brühl at about 1400. Then we spent about eight hours with our friends, Ulrike and Christian, at their home and touring the city a bit. It was so great to see them again and to experience their kind and generous hospitality. And it was also very nice to be able to see my old German "home" in Mannheim. We stopped by Turley Barracks, where I used to work, and saw that it is essentially abandoned, boarded up, and awaiting disposition - probably a decision to be made by the German government and American authorities. I'll post some pics of what we saw yesterday.

We left Mannheim at 2200 and drove a little over four hours to get back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at a little after 0200. Made for a long, but very enjoyable day. Thanks so very much to Christian and Ulrike!

Here are some of the pictures. First of all, the four of us in Mannheim:

And our hosts, Christian and Ulrike, in their kitchen:

The famous "Wasserturm" (water tower) of Mannheim:

"Der Rosengarten" (kind of a concert hall) in Mannheim:

"Das Mannheimer Schloss" (the Mannheim castle):

And, finally, my old soldierin' home, Turley Barracks:

  1. Scott,
Enjoyed your photo's of Mannheim and also sad that Turley Barracks is closed. I was stationed there in 1962-63 as an MP. We vactioned in Europe in 1994 and we stopped in Mannheim and I stopped at Turley. Well it did bring back memories of the good times I had there. I am still in contact with about seven of the guys I served with. Only one transportation company was stationed there
then and our old barracks were being renovated for the University of Maryland. I have since learned that they are now at Sullivan Barracks.

    Thanks again

  5. Believe it or not, I was born at Turley Barracks in 1945 when they were known as Kaiser Wilhelm Kaserne. My parents were among the 200,000 Displaced Persons who eventually came to the US. We stayed at various barracks that housed war refugees in Ludwigsburg and Augsburg, befor emigrating to the U. S. in 1951.

We are living in one of the buildings - 472 is the number, with the ugly flak tower on top. We want to include the complete history, so I would be very glad to learn more about the Displaces Persons. Happy to see you writing about Turley Barracks and Mannheim, in general.
I lived there in 2003-2005 and lived in the "dorms" at UMUC, before it closed. Turley Barracks closed shortly thereafter because the Germans wanted to keep it for historical purposes. Because it is one of the last standing WWII buildings in Mannheim.
My parents still reside in Mannheim. Many great college memories there.

I was in the 17th MP Detachemt at Turley from June, 1967 to July, 1969. We managed the MP station. For ahwile, I worked behind the desk in the station. Then, I became the Registrar of Motor Vehicles for the Mannheim area, with an office just outside Sullivan Barracks. I was in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area for a week, as part of a European vacation, one month ago. I took a number of photos around Turley and Sullivan, as well as many other places around the area. I love the place. They were two of the best years of my life; and, I've had a pretty good life in many ways. In Mannheim, I tried to find the old GI bars, or, at least, the locations. They are, of course, all gone, passed like a dream in the night. I did, however, believe that I found the location of one place: the "Trocadero" bar, now a restaurant called "Spaghetti Oper". I went in with my woman friend, had a beer, and talked with the owner. She has been the owner for 22 years. She has never heard of the Trocadero. She said that before she created the restaurant, the place was a noodle factory. Just down the street, I believe, was the location of the Bavaria Bar, which was a hang out for MPs. I used to go regularly to either the "Four Roses" or the "Scotch Kniepe". I could not find the location of these places. As I recall, they were not too far from the area of the old Trocadero. What a dive the Tocadero was, by the way. To this day, there is still a strip joint next door. Amazing, huh? Some things never change. I found a few other places that hadn't changed much in Heidelberg: "Goldener Hecht", "Red Ox", "Scheffel's", and, in Schriesheim, Stralenberg. It is a long way from the Trocadero to Stralenberg or Dilsberg. I would publish some of my photos on this site if I knew how to do it. "Auf Wiedersehen" Bruce

I was there 76 - 78 and was the PLL clerk for the 41st for about 2 + years. Want to go back and see everything again some day. I remember some good eating at Eddy's Chicken house. Lost touch of too many buddies but have located and spent time with some. I sure wish I still had my '65 Mustang. I remember rolling around that parade field at 5 MPH. Great memories. Turley was one hell of a complex! For most part it was a Transportation facility for the U.S.military for all of Europe.
Most important was the unit I was attached to was the "501st'
better known as "The Red Ball Express" we were the ground component of the much earlier "Berlin Airlift' I recall every week we sent a convoy of trucks ( many times empty) up the Autobahn into Berlin. We were an active part of the "Cold War' effort. We would be stopped at check points and harassed mainly by the Russians then we'd go into barrack at the Berlin Brigade location park our Duce&1/2s and spend next 3 to 5 days drinking beer-maybe tour a bit. Then right back to Turley Barracks. Turley was very unique place during WW2 it was one of the most active German Panzers facility.
When Gen.Patton attact it the panzers went into the underground park below parade field and would not surrender so Patton had Engineers seal up the entrance then flooded the underground park leaving the Germans in a watery grave. When it snowed the snow falling always melts on parade field.
The building as I recall were 3 feet thick and it was easy to see where bullet rounds hit the red sand stone. The hall floors were high grade tile in all shower areas the wooden floors in each of the sleeping rooms were red wood and were beautiful. Gun racks were built into the walls for rifles as troops re-entered bld Our recreation rooms had pool table -card tables mags.books etcs.
Our mess hall was a separate building and the "Club" for entertainment and beer was 5 cents a bottle exchange rate was 5mark 40 penning ( WOW)
I was company Dispatcher SP4 and would have 100 plus guys all over Europe delivering or picking up from military or Embassy at any given time. I recall many funny and not so funny incidents in my time at Turley but proud to have served!
I left there to attend OCS Ft.Benning were I got my commission as 2LT.
Guys like Wheeler from Maine Cosssi from NYC Columus from Ct Lt. Filimore all great guys to serve with

Wow, so much history behind (and under) that place! I remember when the German contractors busted through the concrete behind our barracks in the motorpool. They started finding Nazi relics when the dozers reached about 10 feet-they continued to dig much deeper with thier equiptment.
We all heard the stories about an underground Nazi storage facility that was allegedly under the parade field during WWll. Our arms and NBC storage was located in a "cavelike" setting beneath our barracks.
Anyway, back to the story. I was on some type of guard duty up by the main gate (in the admin bldg by the front gate) when I started hearing news about the contractors finding undetonated Nazi Panzer tank rounds. I went out back to the motor pool to take a look at the huge hole in the ground that they were now excavating. When someone found a Nazi helmet I went to the barracks and retrieved my 35mm. Pentax camera. I then reported back to the main bldg. by the front gate. The German contractors started bringing these Nazi relics
to the bldg. by the main gate where I was. I started taking photos of some dinner china that had the swastika and eagle on the bottom, an SS helmet, and some partially destroyed tank rounds.
I still have the pics somewhere.
About 5 minutes after I took the photos, a white US Government car came through the gates. Some guys in civies came in and took the WWll artifacts and left quickly.
1986 and 87' was a very interesting time to be in West Germany!
Tap and Horne, it was a pleasure serving with you guys.
